Key takeaways from workshop: How to move sustainable construction beyond the niche
On Tuesday 27 January, EASI ZERo hosted the first of four online workshops as part of our “EASI ZERo Academy” series. As we approach the end of the project, we are gathering insights and opinions from different industry stakeholders to understand how sustainable construction solutions can become a real market choice – and not remain a niche.
During the workshop, we showcased and discussed examples of the bio-based and low-impact solutions for building energy renovation developed in the EASI ZERo project.
The interactive session brought together manufacturers, engineering and architecture consultancies, and academics to explore how greener innovation in construction materials can become a winning market proposition.
Key takeaways from the discussions included:
- Price at purchase still dominates decisions – especially in today’s economic context. Lifecycle benefits such as energy savings, health, and durability are important, but often not fully considered.
- Safety, standards and regulation are critical – fire performance, durability and certification are seen as essential preconditions before new materials will be widely specified.
- Documentation is crucial – participants stressed the need for clear documentation, pilot projects and real-life references to build confidence in new materials.
- Health and indoor air quality are strong selling points – for example, VOC-removing interior paint developed in EASI ZERo was perceived as particularly attractive.
- Public procurement and financial incentives can accelerate uptake – when sustainability criteria and energy performance are linked to tenders, loans or support schemes, markets move faster.
These detailed inputs are highly valuable as we move into the final phase of EASI ZERo. They will directly shape how we present, document and position EASI ZERo solutions – and how we bring our low-impact component kit closer to real-world application in the building sector.
Stay tuned for more workshops and the final conference in Brussels over the coming months.
