EASI ZERo showcased near‑zero energy retrofits at Sustainable Places 2025

EASI ZERo and project partners hosted a workshop at Sustainable Places 2025, presenting an innovative portfolio of easy-to-install building envelope components designed for rapid, whole-building retrofits targeting near-zero energy consumption and carbon emissions.

Accelerating deep renovation to meet EU climate goals

Achieving EU climate neutrality by 2050 depends on scaling deep renovation across Europe. Today, the EU’s deep renovation rate is around 0.2% per year—well below the 3% annual target needed by 2030. EASI ZERo is addressing this gap with efficient, scalable, and replicable solutions that can be deployed rapidly across diverse building types and climates.

The session presented a holistic suite of building envelope solutions spanning façades, roofs, and openings, alongside integrated options for renewable energy generation and storage developed and documented in the EASI ZERo project. The portfolio is engineered to minimize embodied energy and CO₂ while improving thermal performance and cutting installation time.

Key innovations include:

  • Bio-sourced and recycled insulation components
  • Low-carbon paints and plasters
  • Lightweight, zero-emission frames for windows and doors

Proven performance through multi-scale testing

At the workshop, EASI ZERo presented results from multi-scale testing and validation pathway—from laboratory and wall-scale prototypes to building-scale simulations. The solutions are designed to:

  • Reduce energy use to under 50 kWh/m²/year
  • Limit carbon emissions to approximately 4 kgCO₂/m²/year
  • Maintain robust performance across a range of building archetypes and climates
