We are delighted to share that Dr. Essam Elnager from EASI ZERo partner BPIE will be taking part in a session on Smart Buildings on 6th of June at 2:00 PM.
Here, he will present a research paper titled: “Optimizing Building Envelope Interventions for Zero-Energy Renovations: Energy and CO₂ Savings across European Member States”
About the paper:
The study investigates how innovative bio-based insulation materials can contribute to zero-energy renovations of residential buildings across the European Union. Using an energy modeling tool aligned with the ISO 52016 standard, the research evaluates how different insulation strategies affect energy consumption, CO₂ emissions, and cost-effectiveness.
The analysis emphasizes the importance of comprehensive insulation—covering walls, roofs, and floors—as significantly more effective than insulating individual elements like windows. The concept of critical R-values is introduced to define the point where further insulation results in diminishing returns in energy and emissions savings.
The study also demonstrates that achieving net zero energy performance, especially in combination with solar PV systems, is possible with integrated insulation strategies. While results vary by country, with renovation costs influencing payback periods, the overall conclusion stresses the need for deep, holistic renovation approaches using bio-based materials to meet EU climate and energy goals effectively.
